Happy Wednesday-feels-like-a-Tuesday! We’ve talked a few times about how short weeks really throw me off, and this one is no exception. I kept thinking it was Monday but then at the same time realized it was a short week and I still had so much crap to do. It’s a strange phenomenon.
Anyways, I don’t know about you, but when I get home from work I am always starving. I’ve been this way forever. Get home, change into a t-shirt, and eat a snack. However, it’s really easy for a “snack” to turn into inhaling an entire bag of Goldfish in one sitting, which is not a good thing. Lately, I’ve been trying to stay on track with my between-meals eating, and I’ve come up with quite a few options! So when you feel a snack attack coming on, reach for one of these healthier options and you will feel like the Queen of Health Foods. Just kidding, but it does help you to not feel like such a ball of grease.
1.Larabars: Y’all, I am obsessed with Larabars. My boss got me stuck on them, and I’m not even mad. They’re made of dates and nuts, and depending on the flavor have other good things! My favorite flavor is this chocolate chip cookie dough, but I haven’t had one that doesn’t taste good! These are pretty filling, so it’s a good snack for when you’re really hungry. They’re a little expensive, but every time I’ve been to the grocery store there’s been a coupon. so watch for those! I also don’t buy a whole box of one flavor, I just buy them separately because I like variety. And I like to keep one or two in my desk drawer just in case my lunch doesn’t last me until 5pm.
2. Fruit: Okay so this one is pretty obvious, but it’s actually a new thing for me. Most of the time, fruit is just such a big commitment. You have to eat a whole apple, or orange, or pear, or you have to cut the tops of your strawberries (I know you can just bite them but I don’t really like to do that.), and no matter what it is you have to wash it. Well, the past few times I’ve visited my parents/they’ve come to visit me this summer, my dad gives me a container full of watermelon chunks and it is fabulous. I just fill up a bowl with some delicious red jewels and eat it- and I don’t have to cut or wash anything! Also I just re-read this section and I am just so high-maintenance that it’s pathetic. But if you aren’t, fruit of any kind is a healthy, yummy snack!
3.Yogurt: My current favorite yogurt is Chobani Flips, mostly because they have delicious little treats you pour in, which 96% of the time includes chocolate chips. Admittedly, it’s not the healthiest snack you could ever have. But I often buy that instead of a pint of ice cream, which I think is a pretty wise choice! Or, you could make your own version by adding fruit, granola, and whatever else. For some more ideas, check out my post on yogurt breakfast bowls!
1.Popcorn: If you can avoid burning it, popcorn is one of the easiest snacks out there! My latest favorite is this SkinnyGirl lime and salt flavor, but any snack-size serving popcorn will do, as long as it’s not drenched in butter. This is great for when you want something crunchy and salty!
2.Bell Peppers and Hummus: This is my latest obsession. I physically cannot stop eating it and if I don’t have it on hand at all times it is a crisis. The other day I was at Whole Foods getting a salad for dinner, and they had pita bread but no hummus on the food bar. So I panicked and ran around to the produce section and got a tub of hummus and some bell peppers. And that’s the day I spent $15 on one meal at Whole Foods. Anyways, I’ll just cut the bell pepper into sticks and dip it right in the hummus! You could use carrots if you don’t like bell peppers for another low carb snack. Also: you should try Mediterranean or olive hummus. It’s SO GOOD.
3.Celery and Nut Butter: What is this, preschool? That’s what I thought to myself as I was making it, but it’s actually tastier than I remember! I tried both peanut butter and almond butter (for research purposes, obviously), and both of them are really great! Also, did you know you can buy celery already cut into sticks? You can. I clearly have issues with preparing produce.
These are just a few healthy options for when you get a snack attack! What’s your favorite healthy snack? Let me know!
That’s all for meow!
