Today is the first post in my “College With K.Moss Lifestyle” series! College was one of the best times in my life (clearly, because I decided to come back!), so I’ve decided to share some of the things I wish I knew/learned during my undergrad years. Last year I shared “9 Things to Do Your First Week of College“, and apparently the people loved it so I’m expanding. From freshman year fun to senior year stress, I’m planning to cover it all! Stay tuned!
I’m starting from the beginning with Freshman year, sharing the things I either wish I had in my dorm days, or things that I did have that made life a lot easier! I know some of you are moving in this week or have maybe already moved, but you may have forgotten a few things!
A Travel Steamer
I hate ironing, so most of the time I just don’t do it, unless it’s absolutely necessary (sorry, mom). I had an iron and ironing board in my dorm room, but I can count on one hand the times I used it! I recently discovered the joys of a hand-held steamer, and it has changed my life. I definitely wish I would have had one of these in my dorm instead of a bulky ironing board that I rarely used! A mini steamer like this one from Bed Bath & Beyond is only $20, a great investment, and barely takes up any space!
A Brita Filter
I know that it’s 2017 and you all probably have one of these already, BUT in case you do not, you need one. It’s much cheaper than buying water bottles, and if you live on the third or fourth floor you don’t have to carry heavy cases of water up the stairs. My last roommate and I actually each had a pitcher, and we never ran out of water, which was fabulous. But if you live in a dorm with a mini fridge, that’s probably not the best use of space! This space saving version is under $20 at Target!
The staple of dorm room closets everywhere. Anything you don’t know where to put, just stuff it in here. I mostly kept toiletries and hair accessories in mine (we were big on headbands and bows back in 2011), but you could store kitchen supplies or whatever you’d like! I actually still have mine and have stored everything from school supplies to gift wrap in it! You can get this one at Target for under $20.
Okay, so one time I somehow spilled coffee grounds all over the floor of my dorm room and it was a small nightmare. We had this really terrible vacuum that had to be charged up, and it did not do the job so we were just walking on coffee grounds for a few weeks. Also, since you’re eating. studying, and sleeping all in the same room, you want to be able to clean things up easily and quickly. Plus, this is much easier to store than an upright vacuum! This one’s on sale for $20 at Target right now!
Whoever you are, wherever you live, you need a small fan. I got one when I moved into the dorm and I honestly can’t remember why, but it’s been very useful for the past 6 years. Noisy neighbors or roommates? Turn on the fan. Live on an enclosed porch with poor insulation in the warmer months? Fan. A/C goes out in summer for the third time in two months? Fan. Trust me, go buy one. This cutie little pink one is just $30 at Target!
So there you have it! Whether you’re ahead of the game or still scrambling to get everything together, I hope this list helps! And if you’re moving in to the dorm for the first time, good luck and have fun! And drink lots of water, it’s hot out there.
That’s all for meow! Stay tuned for more College With K.Moss Lifestyle posts!
